The Elements of Bioinformatics

Posted by Richard Holland.

After being exhibited in public for the first time at our Second Eagle symposium, we have decided to put the full-size PDF of our bioinformatics periodic table online for everyone to download and take a look at.

The table is now available online! Visit:

  1. [...] spin-off of the Eagle Genomics conference in Cambridge, UK, has been The Elements of Bioinformatics, a table of different tools in bioinformatics. You can offer thoughts on their blog (linked above), [...]

Already on twitter, some elements that we have missed are PFAM (via @Alexbateman1), and BioPython (via @pjacock). Other glaring omissions? We will collate using the hash tag #egelements.

  3. Joshua Elmore says:

I don't see the UCSC genome browser, or did I just miss it?

  4. Richard Holland says:

Joshua, thanks for spotting that – one more to add to the list for version 2. We missed a couple of other obvious ones as well. Such is the nature of this kind of project! Ultimately we'd like to set up an online version where people can submit/edit entries directly, but the technical challenges are greater than one might think. Bright ideas on that subject most welcome.

  5. Great idea but would like to see Partek added, possibly under the "Toolkit & APIs".

In any case, this is some great work ;-)

  6. Peter Karp says:

    Some missing tools:
    Under Database/Warehouse: BioWarehouse
    Under genome browsers: Pathway Tools
